Celebrating Outstanding Creative Writing

Kate Rankin wins Kingsmead Young Writers’ Competition 2025

Hot on the heels of receiving the Top in the World Award for Cambridge AS English Language, Kate Rankin has once again achieved remarkable success – this time winning the Kingsmead Young Writers’ Competition 2025 in the Age 16–18 category.

Her captivating short story, “Bloom to Blade,” was unanimously selected by the judging panel for its originality, depth and lyrical style. Renowned author Craig Higginson described it as “an original and beautifully written account of a sword traveling towards its destiny,” adding that Kate is “a very talented and mature young artist.” Fellow judge and author Jayne Bauling praised the story’s creativity and unique perspective, applauding Kate for giving Excalibur its own narrative voice and for the “freshness and originality” of her storytelling.

Kate’s prize includes book vouchers, a cash award and publication of her winning story in the forthcoming Kingsmead Book Fair eBook, set to launch in June 2025.

This outstanding achievement reflects Kate’s exceptional writing talent, her love of language and her ability to craft imaginative worlds that resonate with readers. We are incredibly proud of her success and look forward to seeing where her literary journey leads next.
