SOMERSET COLLEGE GOLF PLAYS INTERNAL COVID WINTER

SOMERSET COLLEGE GOLF PLAYS INTERNAL COVID WINTER LEAGUE

17th September 2020

It might not be the FedEx Cup play-offs, but it is our very own internal league, the SC COVID
Winter League 2020! The golf is competitive, the players are loving it and the ‘gees’ is there.
We are most fortunate that golf is one of the very few sports that has been able to just
about return to normal, although league fixtures are not permitted. De Zalze, our home
course, has been fantastic at welcoming our players back on Monday afternoons. Although
a little wet after the recent heavy rains, it is a beautiful course, in great shape, challenging
the players and giving them much to think about.

Since 20 July, we have been meeting late afternoon on a Monday to play nine holes. ‘Neat’
scorecards are kept and handed in. To keep things interesting, besides the individual gross
and Stableford top three that is announced, we also play an alliance competition of some
kind to keep the players focused and competitive. This works like a charm and has produced
many very close matches. The final round took place on Monday 14 September.
Since a couple of weeks ago, the club has welcomed a few regular Prep School golfers to join
in the back of the field. This is a great opportunity for these boys to become accustomed to
competitive Monday afternoon golf, with the eye on an easy transition into the High School
Golf League scene, a couple of years from now. This is working very well and the boys are
certainly very capable.
