Somerset College’s top four golfers enjoyed a golf experience not to be forgotten at the
recent South African High Schools Championships hosted by Limpopo Province at Koro
Creek Bushveld Golf Estate from 5 – 6 August 2019. Despite it being our first time qualifying
to play in South Africa’s premier High School’s golfing event, we did ourselves incredibly
proud as 84 golfers from 21 schools around the country battled for top honours.
Our team of Annalie Swanepoel, Michael Raggett, Hayden Morgan-Evens and Megan
Streicher played a solid round on day one to lie ninth overall. The very warm days, hard and
fast fairways and quick greens made golfing tricky for all the players as the pressure
mounted on the second and final day of the Championships. We knew we were up against
four golfing academy schools and a couple of big boys’ schools as we turned to play the final
nine holes of the event. As the day’s play ended, we had done our best to be placed 7 th
overall (four shots was the difference between 3 rd and 7 th ).
Annalie, our Captain, eagled the final hole (par 4) to contribute to the scoring. Hayden had
two great rounds (74 & 74) to go 4 over for the event and T14th overall. Our star player
Megan Streicher, who went level and 4 under to get everyone talking, did herself and the
College proud by claiming the overall Individual Championship. It was the first time in the
history of the tournament that a girl has claimed top spot – we are incredibly proud of
Megan and this superb achievement!
