Somerset College Star Swimmer Headed to Deaflympics
Somerset College is bursting with pride as it celebrates the remarkable achievement of Grade 11 student, Kate Allwood, who has officially qualified to represent Team South Africa Deaf in Swimming at the prestigious 2025 Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan.
The announcement was made on 20 August 2025 by the South African Deaf Sports Federation (SADSF), confirming Kate’s selection after a period of intense training and outstanding performances.
This landmark event will mark Kate’s Deaflympics debut, serving as the ultimate stage following her impressive rise in international competition. Her qualification is a direct result of the talent and dedication she displayed at the 1st World Deaf Youth Games in 2024, where she shone brightly on the global stage.
“To be selected to represent your country is the highest honour,” said a Somerset College sports representative. “Kate’s commitment to her sport is inspiring to all our students. We have watched her dedication pay off, and we are incredibly excited for her to compete against the best deaf athletes in the world.”
The Summer Deaflympics is the world’s premier competition for deaf athletes, and the Tokyo event promises to be a showcase of elite talent. The entire Somerset College community will be cheering Kate on as she prepares to make her mark on the international swimming circuit.
We wish Kate the very best of luck in Tokyo.
