Somerset College is a leading independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering schooling from Grade 000 to Matric - IEB and Cambridge AS and A-levels. Founded in 1997, Somerset College is a welcoming, stimulating centre of learning situated in the beautiful Cape Winelands.

SENIOR MATHEMATICS TEACHER

January 2023

The Senior School seeks to employ a well-qualified, dynamic and engaging Mathematics teacher with a passion for developing young people.

 

Non-negotiable criteria:  Only candidates with a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience will be shortlisted.


The successful candidate must:
● have a minimum experience of 5 years in teaching Mathematics in both the GET and FET phases and experience in teaching Advanced Programme Mathematics;
● teach in a relevant and up-to-date manner so that confidence in Mathematics is instilled in the learners;
● have advanced IT skills and be able to use technology to enhance the teaching and learning process in the classroom and online, as required;
● be prepared to be involved in Olympiads and other Mathematics-related competitions for learners;
● be a mentor and provide pastoral care to learners as and when required; contribute to the extramural programme;
● have excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills, working with a team of teachers who report to a Head of Department;
● be engaged in the school activities and work within the values of the College;
● be willing to commit to ongoing personal and professional development;
● have the requisite professional and academic qualifications and proof of registration with SACE.

Applicants should also be comfortable teaching in an online environment using Google Classroom or similar.

PREPARATORY SCHOOL CHOIR DIRECTOR & VOICE TEACHER (PART-TIME)


               1-Year Service Level Agreement. Commencement Date: 01 January 2023


The successful candidate must:
● conduct the Preparatory Junior and Senior Choirs
● manage all activities involving the Choir (e.g. tours, camps) in liaison with the Head: Arts & Culture
● teach Singing up to at least Grade 8 level (Trinity College London, ABRSM, Rockschool) in both the Preparatory and Senior Schools
● accompany voice students at concerts, examinations, eisteddfods, and any other performances
● have suitable academic and professional qualifications
● have a warm and nurturing disposition
● have good interpersonal skills and proven ability to work as part of a team
● have excellent verbal and written communication skills
● be able to participate enthusiastically in the extramural/cultural elective programme
● remain current and aware of the latest trends in technology and education
● have proof of registration with SACE
● uphold the Christian ethos and values of the School

BOARDING HOUSE ASSISTANT FOR BOYS' BOARDING

Somerset College is looking for a young, vibrant and energetic gentleman to join the team. A Boarding House Assistant is a key member of the boarding team, supporting the delivery of pastoral care to the School’s boarders. The role requires an approachable, positive and warm person who is available to all boarders without discrimination or favouritism and who can work well with a range of colleagues. Working as part of a team of residential staff, the post holder will be responsible for assisting in the managing of Vineyard House, our boys’ Boarding House. The post is a residential non-teaching role that does include some extramural activities.


General Responsibilities
● Report to the Head of Boys’ boarding and provide pastoral care for, and supervision of students in the House Pastoral
● Provide pastoral care to students, attend care meetings where required and support students' emotional, cultural and intellectual development
● Support students as they settle into school life
● Adhere to the principles of discretion, confidentiality and information sharing
● Organise and attend social activities for students such as games evenings
● Be a strong presence in the Boarding House communal area during nominated hours of duty
● Assist in maintaining high standards of behaviour, discipline, manners and courtesy
● Support, promote and implement House policies and procedures

  • Applicants for this position are expected to have an appropriate Bachelor of Science degree and must be SACE registered.
  • They should have the ability to work co-operatively with colleagues and a genuine enthusiasm, commitment and passion for education in South Africa.
  • The successful candidate must be a dynamic, passionate Life Sciences teacher who will fully engage with young people so they flourish in both the classroom and in other aspects of their lives.
  • This person should be proactive and keep abreast of innovation in education.

PART-TIME SENIOR SCHOOL DESIGN TEACHER

1-Year Fixed Term Contract -  Commencement: January 2023.

 

  • The successful candidate must be able to teach Grades 10 to 12 Design.   
  • Applicants for this position are expected to have an appropriate tertiary degree and must be SACE registered or in the process of applying for registration. Previous experience in an IEB school system would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge and experience using Adobe Creative Cloud programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc) or Autodesk Maya or AutoCAD would also be advantageous.
  • They should have the ability to work co-operatively with colleagues and have a genuine enthusiasm, commitment and passion for education in South Africa.
  • The successful candidate must be a dynamic, passionate Design teacher who will fully engage with young people so they flourish in both the classroom and in other aspects of their lives.
  • This person should be proactive and keep abreast of innovation in education.
