EXPERIENCED SENIOR SCIENCE TEACHER

(Saturdays only - Part-time, fixed term contract)

Commencement Date: As soon as possible

A Saturday School was started in 2022 in partnership with students from Llwandle in Strand and has now expanded to such an extent that there is a need for more teaching staff.  Somerset College Saturday School seeks to employ (on a part-time, fixed-term contract basis) an energetic, creative and experienced Life Sciences teacher who can teach Grade 11 Life Sciences on Saturdays.

The successful candidate must:

  • have a clear understanding of the requirements of CAPS and experience in teaching Life Sciences at the Senior level.
  • be available on Saturdays for at least 2,5 hours per morning.
  • be a team player who can collaborate with other staff to make the Saturday School endeavour a worthwhile experience for students.
  • be fluent in English with an understanding of isiXhosa and Afrikaans as a bonus.

 

Competencies:

  • well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate and work with other professionals;
  • an interest in and experience with Senior School children (Grade 11 & 12) and a knowledge of these developmental stages;
  • able to use own initiative, be creative and flexible;
  • professionalism and a high standard of ethics;
  • must be able to handle confidential matters ethically and with sensitivity;

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST (Part-Time)

Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory

Fixed-Term Contract (Six Months)

Somerset College seeks to employ an energetic, creative and experienced psychologist who is passionate about supporting and developing wellbeing amongst children.

Commencement Date: 1 July 2023

 

The successful candidate must:

  • have a Master’s degree in Educational, Clinical or Counselling Psychology from a recognised institution;
  • be registered with the HPCSA;
  • have at least 3 years’ experience in the field of psychology (particularly in counselling children).

Competencies:

  • well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate and work with other professionals;
  • an interest in and experience with Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory School children and a knowledge of these developmental stages;
  • experience in working with children and families;
  • strong verbal and written communication skills, along with effective administrative abilities;
  • able to use own initiative, be creative and flexible;
  • professionalism and a high standard of ethics;
  • must be able to handle confidential matters ethically and with sensitivity;
  • previous experience with and knowledge of working with students with barriers to learning will be advantageous.

Duties:

  • provide short to medium-term therapeutic interventions (individual and group psychotherapy, play therapy) to students from Grade 000 to Grade 7;
  • provide psychosocial support in times of crisis (students, family or school);
  • case management and containment;
  • observation and monitoring of students;
  • attendance and contribution to multidisciplinary team meetings;
  • developing intervention plans for teachers and parents;
  • liaison with parents and teachers;
  • adherence to laws, policies, procedures and ethical standards of the HPCSA and teaching profession.
